Food security and poverty eradication at Don Bosco CALM - Namugongo-Kira

Written by Fr Elie Nyadwi. Posted in Home

During the two months of January and February, most of Uganda is dry. Many people take advantage of this period to harvest and store their crops.Maize harvesting is the simple action of separating the cob from its grown medium. This is done when the maize crop is completely dry. Since last January 2016, Don Bosco CALM (Children and Life Mission) has been harvesting the fruits of its maize plantation. Much effort from all Don Bosco CALM stakeholders (Children, Salesians, volunteers and social workers) was marshalled together in order to promote in our Centre food security and poverty eradication. This was achieved through work sensitization during morning and goodnight talks given by Salesian fathers and brothers offering an environment of holistic development to the destitute and vulnerable children in Uganda.

”Manual work at our Don Bosco CALM has become our fourth daily meal”. Says one senior four boy carrying a sack full of maize from the garden. At Don Bosco CALM, children learn how to care for the environment in order to care for our Mother Earth. Children were freely enjoying roasted maize for many days till early January. The maize grains are removed from the cobs, then dried and stored into sacs waiting for grinding. The maize cobs are then collected and taken in the kitchen to be used as fire-wood to cook meals. The maize stalks are collected, and used to fertilize the banana plantation of the Centre. By now, the Don Bosco has harvested almost one ton of maize.
